Color motion picture film
Color motion picture film records color using multiple light-sensitive layers.
Color motion picture film can mean two things: unexposed color film made for use in a motion picture camera, or a finished, color-bearing film ready to be shown in a projector. The earliest color cinematography relied on additive color systems—one was patented by Edward Raymond Turner in 1899 and tested in 1902. A simpler additive system, Kinemacolor, hit the market successfully in 1909. These early methods used black-and-white film to capture and project two or more images through different color filters.
In the 1930s, the first workable subtractive color processes appeared. They still used black-and-white film to record multiple color-filtered source images, but the final print was multicolored and didn’t need special projection gear. Before three-strip Technicolor arrived in 1932, commercial subtractive processes used only two color components, which limited the range of colors they could reproduce.
Kodachrome came out in 1935, and Agfacolor followed in 1936. These were aimed mainly at amateur home movies and slides. They were the first films of the “integral tripack” type—three layers of different color-sensitive emulsion coated on one strip—which is what most people mean when they say “color film.” As of the 2020s, the few color photographic films still being made are this type. The first color negative films and matching print films were modified versions of these; they were introduced around 1940 but only became widely used for commercial motion pictures in the early 1950s. In the US, Eastman Kodak’s Eastmancolor was the standard, though studios or processors often rebranded it with names like “WarnerColor.”
Later color films settled into two standard processes: Eastman Color Negative 2 chemistry (for camera negatives and duplicating stocks) and Eastman Color Positive 2 chemistry (for projection prints), usually called ECN-2 and ECP-2. Fuji’s products work with both.
The shift to color was gradual: about 10% of live-action feature films worldwide were in color in the early 1950s, rising to 90% by the mid-1970s, with a tipping point in 1967. Film remained the dominant form of cinematography until the 2010s, when digital cinematography largely replaced it.

The earliest motion picture stocks were orthochromatic, recording only blue and green light. Manual-colored films appeared in 1895 with Thomas Edison's Annabelle's Dance. Georges Méliès offered manual-painted prints of his films, including A Trip to the Moon (1902), painted frame-by-frame by twenty-one women. The first commercially successful stencil color process was introduced in 1905 by Segundo de Chomón working for Pathé Frères, later called Pathéchrome. By 1910, Pathé had over 400 women employed as stencilers. Film tinting emerged in the early 1910s, giving a uniform monochromatic color, and was popular during the silent era. Toning replaced silver particles with metallic salts or dyes. The Handschiegl Color Process, a dye-transfer equivalent, was first used in Joan the Woman (1917). Eastman Kodak introduced pre-tinted Sonochrome stocks in 1929 in seventeen colors. Tinting and toning continued into the sound era, with sepia-toning used in westerns in the 1930s and 1940s, and tinting as late as 1951 for Lost Continent. Kodak's Sonochrome stocks were still in production until the 1970s.
